3. Don’t rely on memory – use the Live Festival Dashboard
Even the best festival plan can change.
Acts can move.
Demonstrations can change times.
Additional announcements can happen during the weekend.

4. Plan your parking before you set off
If you’re driving to Smoke & Fire Festival, don’t leave parking until the last minute.
The festival advises visitors to approach Promenade Park via the A414 and A414 Maldon Bypass, connecting with Limebrook Way and Park Drive.
General festival parking is available at Promenade Park, with stewards directing visitors to available Pay & Display spaces.
There are also public car parks around Maldon, including:
- Promenade Park
- White Horse Lane
- Friary Fields
- Butt Lane
- High Street East
- Council Offices
Parking arrangements differ for VIP and camping ticket holders, so check the relevant instructions for your ticket before travelling.
Important if you’re not camping
There is no overnight parking.
The festival states that cars must be removed by 11pm on Saturday and 7pm on Sunday.
If you’re planning a late night, arrange your transport accordingly.
5. You can camp – but read the rules first
Want to turn Smoke & Fire into a full weekend?
Weekend camping is available at Promenade Park.
Camping is available for tents and campervans, with the campsite located within the park and close to the festival action.
However, there are a few important things to know.
The campsite:
- Does not have electrical hook-ups
- Does not allow BBQs
- Does not allow live fires
- Has toilets and water facilities
- Has showers available for a charge
- Has security
- Has a nighttime noise curfew
You also cannot sleep in your car.
The festival states that the campsite opens at 08:30 on Saturday and closes at 9:30am on Monday.
Camping checklist
If you’re staying overnight, remember:
- Tent
- Sleeping bag
- Sleeping mat
- Torch
- Portable phone charger
- Toiletries
- Towel
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Comfortable shoes
- Any medication you need
And leave the BBQ at home.
No live fires or BBQs are permitted on the campsite.
6. Don’t bring your own festival food and drink
This one catches people out!
The festival states that visitors are not permitted to bring their own food and drink, and bag searches will take place. There are plenty of food, drink and dietary options available across the festival site.
There is an exception for specialist food or drink required for personal dietary requirements.
So rather than filling your bag with sandwiches and drinks, arrive hungry.
You’re at a BBQ festival, after all.
There will be plenty to choose from, including BBQ, street food and other festival food options.
7. Bring ID – even if you don’t think you’ll need it
Every named ticket holder may be asked to provide ID at the festival entrance.
The festival lists the following as acceptable forms of identification:
- Valid passport
- Valid driving licence
- Valid PASS card
If you’re unable to produce ID when requested, you may be refused entry.
There is another reason to remember your ID.
The festival bars operate a Challenge 25 policy, so you may also be asked for photo ID when purchasing alcohol.

8. Coming with children? Know the rules
Smoke & Fire is a family-friendly festival, with a dedicated family area featuring attractions including fairground rides, bouncy castles and interactive games.
There are, however, some important ticketing rules.
Everyone attending the festival needs a ticket, including children.
Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult aged 21 or over.
The festival also states that a maximum of three under-18 tickets can be purchased with one adult ticket. If you need more than three under-18 tickets, another adult is required.
Family tip
Agree on a meeting point with older children before you start exploring.
With multiple stages, food areas and attractions, it’s surprisingly easy for groups to drift apart.
9. Bring the right kit for an outdoor festival
You don’t need to arrive carrying half your house.
But there are a few things that can make a big difference to your day.

This might be the most important tip of all.

Dogs can attend subject to the festival’s rules. If you’re bringing your dog, make sure they remain on a lead and that you clean up after them. What if the weather changes?
This is an outdoor festival in August, so prepare for both possibilities.
